Based on Barry’s opinion that “federal income tax is unlawful” and that “the IRS is a rogue institution,” court filings reveal that he and his wife, Janis, have spent decades litigating with the Internal Revenue Service, amassing more than $300,000 in back taxes.
According to Arizona State Bar records, Barry was also chastised by a judge in 2018 for “participating in the unauthorised practise of law” after being accused of “engaged in the unlawful practise of law.”
Barry’s anti-federal government stance may throw some light on the lady who refused to inform authorities where her two missing children were for months before their bodies were discovered on her new husband’s property, according to some reports.
JJ Vallow, 7, and Tylee Ryan, 16, were last seen in September, and detectives now suspect they were slain shortly after and buried in the backyard of Lori’s sixth husband, Chad Daybell, who lives next door.
Throughout the investigation into the disappearance of JJ and Tylee, authorities accused Lori of refusing to assist them in their search, and Janis and Lori’s sister,
Summer Shiflet, told CBS News Lori “can’t tell us” where the children were since her phone calls were being monitored in jail. Supporters of Lori and Chad also took to social media to express their belief that the government had no business knowing where JJ and Tylee were at the time.
As a member of the LDS AVOW, Chad was also a contributor to the Southern Poverty Law Center’s 2019 study on anti-government extremism, which mentions him as a member of an end-times preparedness forum.
After that, in November 2019, just weeks after his grandchildren went missing, Barry published a book entitled How the American Public
Can Dismantle the IRS, arguing in its prologue that Americans have been “illegally and deceptively held captive and in bondage by a nefarious organisation known as the Internal Revenue Service.”

In the book, Cox also repeats well-known right-wing conspiracy theories, like the charge that former President Barack Obama is “anti-Christian,” has a “Muslim education,” and has a “history with the LGBRQ [sic] culture.”
Following the discovery of the children’s remains in June, the Cox family’s attorneys, Robert Jarvis and Garrett Smith, released a statement saying that Janis,
Barry, and Summer were “deeply saddened by the recent findings in the investigation into the whereabouts of J.J. and Tylee. Their love for them knows no bounds.” The children’s remains were discovered in June.
